Adding a prompt in ContentGen.io

Prompts tell ContentGen.io what kind of content to generate for your pages. You can create and customise prompts in your workspace settings.

Creating a Prompt

Go to 'Settings' in your workspace and scroll down to Prompts then click on 'Add a Prompt'. Then:

  1. Name your prompt – Choose a clear, descriptive name (e.g. “75-word category blurb for H1”).
  2. Select a model – ContentGen.io supports multiple models. We recommend GPT-4-1106-preview for the most accurate results.
  3. Write your prompt – Either:
  4. Use one of the available prompt templates, or
  5. Create a prompt from scratch, including any instructions relevant to your site.

ContentGen.io will also reference your sitemap data and Google Search Console (if connected) to enrich the output.

  1. Set validation limits – Adjust the minimum and maximum character or word counts as needed.
  2. Click Save – Your prompt will now appear in the Prompts list.

Once your prompt is set up, you can generate content for your site pages.

Tips and Templates for Prompts

Writing effective prompts helps ContentGen.io generate content that’s accurate, consistent, and aligned with your goals.

Tips for writing prompts

  1. Be specific – Clearly state what type of content you want (e.g. “75-word meta description” vs. “Write a description”).
  2. Include constraints – Use word or character counts to control length.
  3. Specify unwanted content – Include specific things you don't want in the content and provide examples for them
  4. e.g. Do not use any em dashes ("—") in the output. Always use commas, colons, or parentheses instead. Example fix: "Ceramic glazing—all against a backdrop of vivid colours." "Ceramic glazing, all against a backdrop of vivid colours."
  5. Define the purpose – Tell the model where the content will appear (e.g. H1 blurb, product description, blog intro).
  6. Set the tone and style – Mention if the writing should be formal, persuasive, friendly, etc.
  7. Leverage data – Remember, ContentGen.io can use your sitemap data, keywords from Google Search Console, and listing details to enrich the output.
  8. Test with preview first – Run a preview on a few pages without using any credits before generating at scale to make sure your prompt produces the desired results.

What to include in prompts

A well-written prompt tells ContentGen.io exactly what you want. The more guidance you provide, the closer the output will match your needs. When writing prompts, consider including:

  • Content length – Specify word count or character count, and give a range if flexibility is acceptable.
  • Language and tone – Define whether the text should be in American/British English, and set the voice (e.g. friendly, professional, persuasive).
  • Placement/purpose – Tell the model where the content will be used (H1 blurb, category intro, meta description, product copy).
  • Variables – Direct the model to use available data that give context such as:
  • {{h1}} – Page heading or title.
  • {{listing_descriptions}} – Page/product listings for factual accuracy.
  • {{gsc_keywords}} – Keywords from Google Search Console.
  • Stylistic rules – Include formatting guidelines (e.g. break into paragraphs, use bullet points, bold/italics) to control readability.
  • Voice & style constraints – Define rules around adjectives, superlatives, rhetorical devices, or specific quirks (e.g. “never use em dashes”).
  • Perspective – Tell the model how to address the reader (e.g. replace “me” with “you”).
  • Prohibited content – List things to avoid (e.g. gendered language, clichés, references to specific years).
  • Post-processing instructions – Describe how to review/refine the draft (e.g. a two-pass workflow for humanisation, fact-checking, trimming).

A great prompt helps ContentGen.io effectively utilise context engineering to create accurate, relevant and on-brand content.
